Lesson 265: Use drawing software or paint tools

💡 TECHNOLOGY & FUTURE SKILLS (40 Lessons)🟣 D. Creating with Technology

← Back to Level 1

Objective

I can use a simple drawing app or paint tool with an adult. I can choose colours and brushes, fix mistakes safely, and save my picture. I remember that people and family rules guide how I use screens.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Drawing safely on screens

We can draw with paper and pencils, and we can also draw with drawing apps or paint tools on screens.

Basic tools in a drawing app

  • A brush or pencil tool lets you make lines and shapes.
  • Colour buttons let you choose different colours.
  • An eraser or undo button helps fix mistakes.

Fixing mistakes safely

  • It is okay to make mistakes when you draw.
  • You can use undo to go back one step.
  • You can use an eraser to gently clean a part.

Saving your work

  • When your picture is nearly done, ask an adult to help you save it.
  • Give your drawing a simple name, like "tree-picture" or "sunny-day".
  • Saving means you can look at it again later.

Safe, kind screen habits

  • Use drawing apps with trusted adults nearby.
  • Follow family rules about screen time and breaks.
  • Do not tap on strange pop-ups or ads. Ask an adult instead.

People and ideas come first

  • The app is a tool. Your ideas make the art.
  • People are more important than screens or apps.
  • We can always pause, rest, and talk if we feel tired.

Adults can say: "This drawing app is a tool. Your ideas matter most. We will use the tools, fix mistakes, save your picture, and follow our family rules for screens."

Guided Practice — Try tools in a drawing app

You and an adult will open a simple drawing app and try some tools together.

  1. An adult chooses a safe drawing app or paint tool and opens a blank page.
  2. Point to the brush or pencil tool. Make a few short lines together. Say: "This is our drawing tool."
  3. Tap a colour button. Draw a little more. Ask your child: "What colour did we choose?"
  4. Show the undo button. Draw a small line, then tap undo. Say: "Undo helps us fix one step."
  5. Show the eraser tool. Erase a tiny part of the picture. Remind your child that mistakes are okay.
  6. Together, draw a simple scene (for example, a sun, a tree, and a house). Keep it small and simple.
  7. Ask your child: "How could we save this picture?" With an adult, press save and give it a name. Say together: "We saved our art."

Practice — My "safe drawing steps" page

Use this practice to help your child remember simple steps for using drawing apps kindly and safely.

  1. On a new page, write or trace the title: "My safe drawing steps".
  2. Draw four small boxes down the page. Number them 1, 2, 3, 4.
  3. In box 1, help your child draw someone asking an adult before using a tablet. Underneath, write or trace: "I ask an adult."
  4. In box 2, draw a simple drawing app screen with colours and a brush. Underneath, write: "I use tools kindly."
  5. In box 3, draw a little save icon (like a small square with a line) or a folder. Underneath, write: "I save my art."
  6. In box 4, draw a child taking a break from the screen (stretching, playing, or reading). Underneath, write: "I take breaks."
  7. Read all four steps together. Ask your child: "Which step helps you most?" Circle it and talk about why.
