Mission Briefing — Comparing numbers

When we compare two numbers, we decide which number is bigger and which is smaller.

Words we use

  • More means the number is bigger.
  • Less means the number is smaller.
  • Equal means they are the same.

Symbols we use

  • < means “is less than”.
  • > means “is greater than”.
  • = means “is equal to”.

Easy tip

  • The small, pointy side points to the smaller number.
  • The wide, open side faces the bigger number.

First, count or look at the number line. Then choose the correct word or symbol.

Picture strip: Using < and > to compare

Which group has more?

We can write this as 4 < 6.

Reading the symbols

4 < 6 4 is less than 6 9 > 7 9 is greater than 7

< points to the smaller number. > points to the bigger number.

Training Run — Grab & Compare

Tap to play and pause.

Use real objects like pencils, cubes, or counters. Grab a small handful. Your partner grabs a handful too. Count both groups out loud. Point to the group with more and the group with less. If they match, say equal. Then open the tracing pad and trace a word (more/less/equal) and write one true sentence to match what you see.

Practice 1 — Drag & Drop: Build the comparison

Drag the two numbers and the correct symbol into the boxes. Put them in this order: number – symbol – number.

Use 3, 8, and the correct symbol.

8 < 3

Use 14, 9, and the correct symbol.

> 9 14

Use 20, 20, and the correct symbol.

20 = 20

Use 37, 45, and the correct symbol.

45 < 37

Use 52, 49, and the correct symbol.

49 52 >

Use 60, 70, and the correct symbol.

60 < 70

Use 35, 30, and the correct symbol.

35 30 >

Use 90, 100, and the correct symbol.
