Objective

Find rhyming and opposite words in short texts so you can hear sound patterns and build stronger vocabulary.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Rhyming words and opposite words

Two words rhyme when they end with the same sound:

  • cat — hat
  • sun — fun
  • light — night

To check if words rhyme, say them out loud and listen to the last part of the word.

Opposite words (also called antonyms) mean very different things:

  • hot — cold
  • big — small
  • noisy — quiet

Good readers can spot rhyming and opposite words in stories and poems. This helps with:

  1. Sound play — hearing word patterns.
  2. Meaning — growing stronger vocabulary.

Today you will:

  • Read a tiny rhyme-and-opposites mini-book.
  • Find rhyming pairs and opposite pairs.
  • Talk about what the words mean.
