Objective

I can write a clear introduction that hooks the reader and names the topic, and a strong conclusion that restates the main idea and leaves a final thought.

Materials

Tip: Keep your intro and closing about the same main idea as your body sentences.

Mini-lesson — Hook, Topic, Restate, Close

  1. Hook: Start with a question, a surprising fact, a short story, or a bold statement.
  2. Name the topic: Tell what the paragraph will be about in one clear sentence.
  3. Restate in the conclusion: Say the main idea again in different words.
  4. Closing thought: End with a feeling, wish, lesson, or simple call to action.
  5. Stay aligned: Intro ↔ body ↔ conclusion must match the same idea.

  1. Write an introduction with a hook + topic:
    • Hook idea: “What if a short break could make your brain faster?”
    • State topic: Recess helps students recharge and learn better.
  2. Draft a conclusion that restates the idea + closing thought:
    • Restate: Short play breaks give our bodies and minds new energy.
    • Close: “Let’s use recess well so we return ready to learn.”
