Materials

Mini-lesson — What is a class celebration day?

A class celebration day is a time to notice what we learned together and to say thank you in kind, calm ways.

Looking back

  • We remember SEL tools like feelings words, calm breathing, kindness, problem-solving, and trying again.
  • We think of small wins, like using a calm tool or sharing kindly.

Thanking others

  • We can say "Thank you" to classmates, teachers, and family for helping us learn.
  • We can notice when someone was a good friend or a helpful adult.

Kind celebrations

  • We can clap once or twice for everyone, not just one person.
  • We can say things like "We did this together" or "We all tried".
  • We do not shout at others or leave them out.

Sharing SEL wins

  • We can share a time we used a calm tool or kind words.
  • We can share when we asked for help or tried again after a mistake.
  • We listen to others without laughing at them.

Looking forward

  • We can choose one SEL tool we want to keep using next year.
  • We can remember that our class grew together.
  • We can feel proud that we kept trying.

Adults can say: "Today we celebrate our class. We will notice how we grew and thank each other with kind words and calm voices."

Guided Practice — Circle of thanks

You and an adult will lead a simple "circle of thanks" to close the year.

  1. Sit in a circle (or side by side at home). Explain that everyone will have a turn, but it is okay to pass.
  2. Choose a small item to be a "talking object" (for example, a soft toy). The person holding it may speak or pass.
  3. When it is your turn, share one SEL win from the year (for example, "I used calm breaths" or "I was kind to a new friend").
  4. Then say "thank you" to someone in the circle (for example, "Thank you for helping me").
  5. Pass the talking object around the circle until everyone has had a chance to share or pass.
  6. After the circle, lead one class cheer: a quiet clap, a wave, or a gentle "We did it" together.
  7. End by saying a simple sentence like: "We are thankful for our SEL tools and for each other."

Practice — My class celebration page

Use this practice to help your child remember good moments from the class and say thank you.

  1. On a new page, write or trace the title "Class celebration day" at the top.
  2. Draw a simple picture of your class (or family group at home) enjoying a calm celebration.
  3. Under the picture, draw or write one SEL win from this year (for example, "I used calm breaths" or "I was kind to a new friend").
  4. Next, draw or write one person you want to thank (for example, a teacher, friend, or family member) and what you thank them for.
  5. Add small stars or hearts around the page as "celebration" marks.
  6. Read the page together and say sentences like: "We are thankful for our class." and "We learned and grew together."
  7. Keep the page in a safe place, such as a folder or display wall, as a memory of this SEL year.
