Lesson 274: Understand that ChatGPT is a type of AI helper

Objective

I can say that ChatGPT is a type of AI helper that uses words. I can remember that people invented and control AI tools, that AI is not a person, and that I should ask a trusted adult and follow family rules when using AI.

Materials

Mini-lesson — ChatGPT is a word-based AI helper

AI means artificial intelligence. It is a kind of computer program that can spot patterns and guess answers.

What is ChatGPT?

  • ChatGPT is a type of AI helper that works with words.
  • You type a question or task, and it writes back with words.
  • It learned from many examples of text, like books and websites.

What ChatGPT can and cannot do

  • It can help explain ideas or give examples.
  • It can help adults plan lessons or write practice questions.
  • It cannot feel happy or sad.
  • It cannot see or hear the room you are in.
  • It is not a person and not a friend.

People are in charge of AI

  • Humans designed and built AI tools.
  • People choose how to use or not use them.
  • People set rules for safe and kind use.

Staying safe with AI helpers

  • We do not share our full name, address, school, or other private details with AI.
  • We ask a trusted adult before using AI tools.
  • If an answer looks wrong or makes us worried, we talk to an adult.

Adults can say: "ChatGPT is a word helper that people invented. It can give ideas, but humans are still in charge and we follow our family rules."

Guided Practice — Sort "AI helper" and "not AI"

Use this activity to help your child notice which things are AI helpers and which are not AI.

  1. On paper, draw two boxes. Label one "AI helper" and the other "Not AI".
  2. Say different examples and help your child decide where they go: ChatGPT, a door, a calculator, a book, a talking map app, a pencil.
  3. For each item, ask: "Does this use smart computer patterns to guess or speak, or is it just a tool?"
  4. Draw or write each example in the correct box with your child.
  5. Talk about the AI box: "These are helpers that use code and patterns. People invented them and people are in charge."
  6. Talk about the "Not AI" box: "These tools are useful, but they do not make guesses by themselves."
  7. Remind your child that we always use AI with rules and trusted adults.

Practice — My "AI helper" rules

Use this page to help your child build a simple list of family rules for using AI helpers like ChatGPT.

  1. On a new page, write the title: "My AI helper rules".
  2. Ask your child to draw a speech bubble screen (a rectangle with little chat lines) to show an AI helper.
  3. Under the picture, help them write Rule 1: "I use AI with a trusted adult."
  4. Rule 2: "I do not share my full name, address, or school."
  5. Rule 3: "If an answer feels wrong or unkind, I tell an adult."
  6. Let your child add one more rule, such as: "We use AI to learn, not to be unkind."
  7. Read the rules together and post the page in your learning area as a friendly reminder.

Quick Check — ChatGPT and AI helpers

Answer each question about what ChatGPT is, what AI can and cannot do, and how to stay safe.

1) What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI tool that uses text to answer questions.

2) Who invented AI helpers like ChatGPT?

Humans design and build AI tools.

3) What can ChatGPT not do?

ChatGPT cannot see, hear, or feel. It only works with text.

4) Who is in charge when we use AI?

Humans decide how and when to use AI tools.

5) What should you do before using AI like ChatGPT?

An adult can help you use AI safely and kindly.

6) Which information should you not share with AI?

Private details stay with trusted adults, not AI tools.

7) How does ChatGPT choose its words?

AI tools guess answers based on patterns in the text they were trained on.

8) What should you do if an AI answer feels wrong or worrying?

Adults can help you check information and stay safe.

9) Which sentence is true about ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a tool, not a human friend.

10) What is the big idea of this lesson?

We are learning that AI can help with words, but humans stay in charge and follow safety rules.
