Objective

I can imagine a helpful invention and explain how AI helpers could support people who are working on it. I can remember that people are in charge of inventions and AI, and that ideas should be kind, safe, and helpful.

Materials

Mini-lesson — Imagine helpful inventions with AI

People use their ideas to make inventions. An invention can help people, animals, or the planet.

Imagining new inventions

  • A clean-up robot that picks up litter in parks.
  • A reading lamp that turns off when you fall asleep.
  • A smart backpack that reminds you to pack your lunch.
  • A garden helper that waters plants at the right time.

How AI could help inventors

  • AI can suggest ideas for shapes, colours, or designs.
  • It can help write plans or simple checklists.
  • It can give examples of similar tools that already exist.
  • It can help translate words for people in different languages.

What AI cannot do alone

  • AI cannot build the invention by itself.
  • It cannot test the invention in real life.
  • It cannot decide if something is safe without people.

Ideas must be kind and safe

  • We imagine inventions that help, not inventions that hurt or tease others.
  • We think: "Who does this help? Is it kind? Is it safe?"
  • We talk to adults about good rules for using our ideas.

Adults can say: "Let us imagine an invention that helps the world. We can ask an AI helper for ideas, but people are in charge of what we choose."

Guided Practice — Choose a helpful invention idea

Use this talk-and-draw activity to help your child imagine an invention that AI could help with.

  1. Ask: "What kind of problem would you like to help solve?" (litter, lonely pets, lost items, spills, broken toys).
  2. On paper, draw three small boxes and label them: "Helps people", "Helps animals", "Helps the planet".
  3. Work together to think of one idea for each box. Draw a tiny picture or write one word in each box.
  4. Let your child choose their favourite idea. Circle that box.
  5. Talk together: "How could AI help?" For example:
    • AI could suggest steps for building it.
    • AI could think of safety rules.
    • AI could help explain the idea in simple words.
  6. Remind your child: people still make decisions, test the idea, and follow safety rules.
  7. Say: "We will use AI as a helper, but humans are the boss of our invention."

Practice — My AI invention page

Use this page to help your child draw and write about one invention idea that AI could help with.

  1. On a new page, write the title: "My AI invention".
  2. Ask your child to draw their invention in the middle of the page (for example: clean-up robot, talking plant helper, lost-toy finder).
  3. Under the picture, help them write: "My invention is a ______."
  4. On the next line, write: "It helps by ______." (picking up rubbish, helping animals, reminding people, saving water, etc.).
  5. Add one more line: "AI can help by ______." (giving ideas, making a plan, checking safety rules).
  6. Talk together: "Who is still the boss of this invention and AI?" Help your child answer: "People are."
  7. Read the page aloud and celebrate their kind and helpful idea.

Quick Check — Imagining inventions with AI

Answer each question about inventions, AI helpers, and who is in charge.

1) What is an invention?

Inventions are new ideas or tools that people make to help with jobs or problems.

2) Which is a helpful invention idea?

Helpful inventions make life better for people, animals, or the planet.

3) How could an AI helper support inventors?

AI helpers can give ideas and plans in words, but people still build and test inventions.

4) Who is in charge of inventions and AI?

Humans decide how and when to use AI and inventions.

5) Which question is good to ask about a new idea?

We want inventions and AI ideas that are kind, safe, and helpful.

6) What should you do before using AI to help with an idea?

Adults can help you use AI helpers safely and kindly.

7) Which job still needs real people?

Only people can build and test inventions in the real world.

8) Which is a kind AI prompt for invention ideas?

Kind prompts ask for helpful ideas, not hurtful ones.

9) What should you do if an AI idea seems unsafe or unkind?

Adults can help you decide which ideas are safe and kind.

10) What is the big idea of this lesson?

We are learning to imagine inventions that help the world, using AI as a helper while humans lead.
